A series of " Design Story Tales" to be held during
September and October 2011
S tructure of Spirit, Design of the Heart and Washington Tapestries are photographic exhibitions by leading architectural photographer Kenneth Wyner that celebrate the Washington design community, its architects, designers, builders, engineers and the structures they create. Structure of Spirit will be exhibited at the national headquarters of the American Institute of Architects September 1-October 28, 2011, (opening reception October 1), and Washington Tapestries will be on view at the Washington Design Center November 4-12, 2011, ( Opening reception will be held Tuesday November 8, 2011 from 5-7:30pm ). Design Story Tales are evening events in September and October featuring more than 20 design firms, several restaurants, plenty of great, funny and heartfelt stories, and food and drink.
Kenneth Wyner discusses the exhibitions
“
"These photographs are abstractions of architectural and design projects in Washington, DC, New York, and Hong Kong, created by a brilliant group of people who I know as friends, colleagues, clients and muses.Their collective energy and vision has been a continual source of inspiration.Unfortunately, the last few years have been economically very difficult ones for the design community and have left people financially, emotionally and psychologically battered.I want these exhibitions and events to be a tonic to help people to forget about their difficulties, to celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to the future. There are more than 70 works in the two exhibitions that represent a futuristic architecture where the wildest design dreams are fulfilled and budget is not an issue. This work represents a fantastical view of the architecture of the future, awakened from the architecture of the present.
“"The works in Structure of Spirit will feature powerful design, always unique angles, cutting edge computer technique, all printed on various media including brushed aluminum, corrugated recycled cardboard, and cloth. These works are transformed from mere photographs to inspirational design talisman.
" Washington Tapestries features bold and daring images of the capital city’s architectural icons printed as tapestries and wall hangings on fabric and canvas. This special exhibition in November will run in conjunction with FotoWeekDC.
“" Design Story Tales are creative and relaxed storytelling events to be held this September and October featuring some of Washington’s design stars. More than 20 different firms are participating in what I expect to be evenings of excitement and great energy. All will be held at AIA’s headquarters, a beautiful venue with a unique atmosphere.
"“The best way to describe these events would be a cross between Monty Python, Reality TV, and a panel discussion on the design process. These will be very individualized evenings with food and drink, and a private viewing of the Structure of Spirit .
"“Expect unusual & spontaneous activity, with beautiful and dramatic visuals, and a behind the scenes look at how designers and entrepreneurs find their inspiration."
About Kenneth M. Wyner
Washington, DC-native Kenneth M. Wyner has been part of the city's artistic community since 1969, when he first exhibited work at the Icon Gallery, the first gallery devoted exclusively to photography located in Washington, DC,and run by Mark Power. For more than 40 years he has balanced dual careers as commercial photographer, photographing the architecture and interiors created by leading architects and designers, and an artist championed by pioneering figures including Walter Hopps. Former Washington Post architecture critic Benjamin Forgey wrote of an earlier exhibition: "With their strong compositions, richly amplified colors and super-imposed patterns Wyner's [works] ... are almost over the top. Yet formal control and emotional honesty keep these works fresh and convincing." ("Kenneth Wyner's Mall: Through a Lens, Dreamily," The Washington Post , July 1, 2000). His work has been extensively published in books, magazines and newspapers including The Washington Post, The New York Times, Architecture, Home & Design and elsewhere.

"This exhibition and the related story telling events are my way of expressing gratitude and awe for the great work that has been done by all those associated with the creation of built environments and spaces. It has been a great pleasure and deep commitment to help insure that your vision is captured for all to see.
I look forward to seeing you at the opening party on October 1,2011 5:30 to 10:00 at the national office of The American Institute of Architects in Washington DC. If you can get a chance to participate in one of these great evenings planned, I am sure you will find new friends, new inspiration, and an opportunity to view The Structure of Spirit exhibition in a quiet and tranquil atmosphere.
Please give Nord Wennerstrom a call or an email if you would like to arrange an interview and private viewing of the exhibition, or to gather any information not available on this site.
Thanks again for participating in any or all of these events and for supporting the Washington design community."
